Godfather

This is Theo/Teddy. He is my godson. I am his godfather. In addition we share a birthday (date not year of course :-p)

I don’t get to see him too often but I went to visit him last weekend and truly he is a really great guy with a lovely open nature.

He, of course, shares a name with, in my opinion, the greatest of US Presidents – Theodore Roosevelt.

As Theo edges over the line of 2 years old (and me a number more) I leave this  post with some advice from the great TR. They are from a talk he gave to school children in the 1890′s:

There are two things that I want you to make up your minds to: first, that you are going to have a good time as long as you live – I have no use for the sour-faced man – and next, that you are going to do something worthwhile, that you are going to work hard and do the things you set out to do

I was thinking about something to write on shadow when I remembered this by Takuan:

Shonin I have composed a poem.

Kokushi Let’s hear it.

Shonin When I chant, Both Buddha and self Cease to exist. There is only the voice that says, Namu Amida Butsu.

Kokushi Something’s wrong with the last couple of lines, don’t you think

(after a lapse of time)

Shonin This is how I’ve written it When I chant, Both Buddha and self Cease to exist. Namu Amida Butsu.

Kokushi There You got it.

This is a theme of mine at the moment – 30,000 people ran this and it easy to objectify them. However each has a story, each has a motivation and meaning within and outside this race.

It is the same wherever we are, I am happy that photography gives me a chance to step outside my own little bubble and story to see all this other stuff even for a second.

Yes very happy. Have a great weekend all.

London Marathon – running, crawling, standing

Some shots of the various guys and gals participating and watching. I’m a bit of a sucker for crowd shots – you can look and see a mass but you can also look and see many individuals doing their thing. It is cool.

Ice cream, man!

If I can I prefer not to take pictures of people who don’t have a choice in how they are portrayed (unless it is flattering).

In this case though I find it an important definition of the marathon experience and I try and represent that in this photo. – the participants in effort through and the spectators less so. At the end of the day though the glory is to the participants.

You feel a complete fraud encouraging the runners as they struggle by, calling out encouragements – “Go on Dave, only 10 miles to go!”. Sometimes you get no reaction, sometimes they look at you with the eyes of the dead but many times you get a wave, a thumbs up, a thanks and for that second you are connected and it feels right.

I forgot how lovely an experience it is – I am in awe of all those that run. I’ll put up more photos over the coming days.
